When you make a tensile test for [±45/0/90]s and [90/±45/0]s laminates you may observe different failure strengths. This may seem first surprising since the laminates are basically the same  only the stacking sequence is different, which should not influence on the inplane values. Test samples are not infinite, however. At the free edges of a laminate, outofplane stresses arise even when the laminate is subjected to inplane loading. Outofplane stresses are caused by the mismatch of material properties in the bonded adjacent layers. Read more...

Structures are not ideal  Challenges of buckling analyses
The linear buckling analysis is widely used for determining the load level at which the structure loses its stability. In reality, structures may be sensitive to even small imperfections in their shape, which is accounted for by applying large factors of safety when using the linear buckling analysis. The geometrically nonlinear analysis describes the buckling behavior more accurately, thus giving better confidence on the performance of the design. The introduction of geometric imperfections in the structure plays an important role when applying the nonlinear analysis in buckling problems. Read more...
